Feline Heartworm

If you happened to stop by and Meet Keena Kitty, you know she has been diagnosed positive for feline heartworm antibody. This disease is preventable in dogs as well as cats now. There is no treatment for cats that have contracted the full blown disease. They are treated symptomatically and support is all the vets can do right now. Surgery to remove the worms is possible but just as risky and likely very expensive. To find out more about heartworm in cats, please visit the links below. I have learned more than I want to since Keena's diagnosis. Once a month prevention could have save both her and myself from the possibly painful and stressful times to come.
FEBRUARY 2000 UPDATE! Keena had radiographs of her heart and lungs with no abnormalities from the heartworm disease shown! She has been started on Heartgard Chewables (ivermectin) to control development of the disease and any reinfection. Sabeen and Toast have also started taking Heartgard to prevent any infection. They like their 'treat' once per month!
Please find out more…prevention is worth so much in the absence of a cure.
OCTOBER 2002 UPDATE!!!! We are happy dancing here at The Cozy Corner! Keena just had her yearly checkup and she is heartworm free! Her heart is strong and her lungs are clear. Her doctor tells us there are no guarentees but it looks like she has fought off the heartworm. As long as she continues to take heartguard she shouldn't have to worry about those nasty wormies any more! We are so happy!
